A two-day eCPR training will be offered before the Alternatives Conference in Austin, TX, December 2-3, 2013. Through a combination of presentations, interactive discussions, and dynamic role-plays, trainees will learn about and practice the key concepts involved in effectively supporting a person through an emotional crisis and into healing. eCPR training is appropriate for the general public, peer and other service providers, family members, administrators, and others. No previous training is necessary.
This two-day training is to certify people as proficient to provide eCPR. Those who do not meet the proficiency standards will receive a certificate of participation.
Said one eCPR training attendee, "It was one of the most profound experiences I have ever had. This is the kind of work I want to be doing to build community. It is a transformative process."
Emotional crisis is universal. It can happen to anyone at any time. Emotional CPR (eCPR) is a public health education program that teaches people to assist others through an emotional crisis. Just as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) has saved many lives, emotional CPR also saves lives and prevents unnecessary use of costly human service resources.
How it Works
eCPR includes three elements: C=Connecting, P=emPowering, and R=Revitalizing. The Connecting process of eCPR involves deepening listening skills, practicing presence, and creating a sense of safety for the person experiencing a crisis. The emPowering process supports people to feel empowered, hopeful, engaged in life, and able to plan next steps. In the Revitalization process, people re-engage in relationships, and resume or begin routines that support health and wellness. This process reinforces the person’s sense of mastery and accomplishment, further energizing the healing process. eCPR is based on a number of shared support approaches and values, including: trauma-informed care, counseling after disasters, peer support, emotional intelligence, suicide prevention, and cultural attunement.
Laypeople certified in eCPR can help others recover from severe emotional distress, trauma, and/or disasters, thus preventing unnecessary use of costly hospital emergency rooms, public safety resources, and mental health services. eCPR helps to demystify emotional crises so community members know what to do when they encounter someone in emotional crisis. This public health education program is easily adaptable to any crisis situation and can be used with culturally diverse populations. When people feel that they have a meaningful and valued place in the community, they are less likely to “act out” and hurt themselves or others. Thus, eCPR helps build stronger and more resilient communities.
